They all fail after a short time. The only thing worse than pondering how I've been able to get along without it all these years is to think about how much time I've wasted not having it. This thing is simply a joy to set-up and use. This missing star is caused by the case being absolutely junk. The plastic "hinges" don't last very long, nor will the molded "tits" in the case to grip and hold / align the little parts. It requires almost no effort to remove but when it's on - it's on. Two-years of nearly constant, serious use and it still works just like the day I got it.
No slipping. No wobbling while you're trying to drill. This thing is INCREDIBLE. I would complain about the price, but that's why inventors get patents. Clean-up while you can Jack Rabbit. Such a great tool for such a handsome price deserves far better than the el-cheapo plastic case this thing comes in - especially since keeping track of all the little components to this set is critical. BTW, as of this posting, Amazon's price is $20 too high. Just build a small box for it and keep the parts in there like I did.
The drill-bit release gizmo borders on magic. Everything ends up rolling around loose in a case that won't stay shut. All the little parts are first-class quality. No wonder Norm has one.Why the 4 stars. Make sure to clean the counter-sinks with a little wire brush before each use.Don't let the junky case stop you from buying this. Check the Jack Rabbit site for the lowest price.
There are no set screws to hold the bit in place (I really had a problem with that design on the DeWalt). I have tried quite a few solutons to this problem, and for the money the Jack Rabbit is a good one. It is more durable, and easier to use than the flip type. Once again Norm has made me a better woodworker. Thanks New Yankee.
So much so that my neighbor tried to steal if from my shop the first time he saw it. I also appreciate the magnet in the kit.
The kit arrived in a couple of days in a nice package that will insure that I do not lose any of the pieces, as I prone to doing. For anyone that is use to drilling countersinks with the standard setup I am sure you get frustrated with the way the assembly will eventually loosed and you are constantly having to re-tighten the set screw. The design of this tool all but eliminates that issue.
I have watched Norm use this tool on numerous occasions and thought I would purchase one. The brass stop collar has not left one mark on the surface of the holes that I have drilled.
The bit and countersink and threaded into the assembly and when tightened provides a secure fit. I have drilled over 150 counter sinks and it has not slipped once.
I no longer have the issue of screws falling from the bit in those hard to reach places. This is a well-designed and useful tool.
He put the screws in, he was done and all with one (1) drill. After a few rings Lisa answered the phone and boy was she nice. I first noticed Norm Abrams on "The New Yankee Workshop" using this tool on every episode. After a quick search on Norm's web site I found that the object of my desire was called the "Jack Rabbit".I called my local woodworking store here in Omaha, NE to see if they had ever considered carrying them. I would give this tool a higher rating if I could due to the ingenuity, quality and friendliness of the tool and company.I recommend this tool to anyone working on any wood project.***UPDATE 3-5-08****Shortly after placing this review I received a kind email from Jeff Giffin, the General Manager of Jack Rabbit tools himself, thanking me for my kind words. I immediately wanted one. So I decided to take the initiative and called Jack Rabbit Tool myself.
I ordered the deluxe kit and it was here in a couple days. The tool comes in a nice little kit which holds everything securely in place. He would drill and countersink his holes at the same time THEN he just pulled the drill & countersink off to reveal a magnetized screw bit. She answered all off my questions about the tool and the company and we had a good conversation. I also knew that if Norm likes it then it must be quality. They said they had not heard of this tool but it sounded interesting. All of the parts look and feel as nice as you could ever hope for and the work just as well. What a guy.
